Although Rameau’s operas have not yet returned to the usual operatic repertoire, their ballet music – of great color not only for its rich and varied instrumentation but for its rhythmic, melodic and harmonic peculiarities – has become deservedly popular. The music for Platée is so vivid and full of sudden mood swings that its own choreography suggests. From Dardanus it was said at the time that it was “so loaded with music that for three hours the musicians of the orchestra didn’t even have time to sneeze.”
Pigmalion , one of Rameau’s most popular works, includes a delicious sequence of ten short dances entitled Les différents caractères de la danse , which covers all the basics of dance French in a single and easy lesson.
